Hey! I’m Ethan Franks and the creator, author and photographer of The Wichita Explorer blog. As an Austin, Texas transplant to Wichita, Kansas I found myself at a loss for the outdoor adventures I was used to. Having grown up in Austin I was accustomed to hiking, rock climbing, trail running, mountain biking and kayaking all within city limits. Since moving to Wichita in 2012 I’ve struggled with the challenges of being an outdoor enthusiast in the Great Plains. Through this struggle I’ve been time and again surprised by the beauty and adventure to be had in Kansas and have learned a lot about training for larger outdoor pursuits down here at 1300 ft above sea level.
The Wichita Explorer is my place to share the knowledge and experiences I have and hopefully ignite a few folks to the adventure that awaits them in Wichita and abroad. Whether you’re interested in finding new places to explore in and around Kansas, training advice, gear reviews or just looking through some interesting photos, I hope The Wichita Explorer is a valuable resource for you. Live the adventure!
